Project description
READ ME provides printing production services that consist in printing and binding of books, brochures, photo albums, calendars, and magazines, and publication distribution. We had long been considering an investment which would shorten lead times, increase product quality and lower the final product price due to cost reduction. The printing market is increasingly demanding in terms of innovativeness of preparation for printing and production and speed of order execution. We had therefore decided to use Norway Grants to invest in modern equipment and processes which significantly reduced the environmental impact of our printing house.
Under the project we have introduced a new double-sided printing system within one process. To achieve that, a technological line for double-sided printing and a folding machine were purchased. R&D works were carried out to connect the new printing system with the existing infrastructure. It automated and optimized the production process, eliminated bottlenecks and significantly shortened operation times. A module was developed that collects and processes data on the productivity of the photovoltaic installation that was also purchased under the project, to use it in the most efficient way. The installation produces electricity in the zero-export mode, i.e. it is used fully for the needs of the printing house, sitting on its roof.
The improved precision of the printing processes has resulted in one and a half times less paper consumption on the pre-run and a reduction of paper waste in the throughput process by 154 tons per year in total. The annual CO² emissions have been reduced by 77 tons per year and the energy consumption - by 0.09 GWh.
In parallel to the project activities we conducted a number of complementary activities to modernize the operations, e. g. the system of printing plates production has been upgraded to match the double-sided printing speed which requires larger number of printing plates.
READ ME is now a locally leading printing house, attractive for publishers and presenting good practice in terms of environmentally friendly production.
