Project description
Besides tooth decay, periodontal disease is the most common cause of premature tooth loss. Many patients suffer from bleeding gums, exposed roots or loosening of the teeth, but not everyone realizes that these are symptoms of periodontitis. Periodontics deals specifically with the prevention and treatment of that disease which affects the structures responsible for keeping teeth in the bone. The project has been about the creation and implementation of procedures for innovative periodontic therapy of bone reconstruction, mainly in elderly patients. The therapy is based on digital non-invasive design techniques, and on the use of laser light for treatment and regeneration, including treatment of mucous membrane in patients after chemo and radio therapy, treatment and pain relief and acceleration of wound healing process.
The project covered the purchase of medical equipment, i.e. a digital tomograph, an intraoral scanner, an SD printer and a laser bed, mentoring services of the Norwegian project partner, Drammen Laserklinikk, and the purchase of consulting services to develop protocols for the new dental and general medical treatments.
Apart from the dental surgery procedure of bone reconstruction based on digital treatment design techniques, 11 medical procedures using red and near-infrared light were developed. Of those 6 are dental procedures and 5 are general medical procedures supporting the treatment of asthma, RA, diabetic wounds, migraines and bad mood. The procedures describe proceedings protocols, sequences of action, and the use of devices. The laser procedures additionally include therapeutic doses and irradiation frequencies based on scientific literature and recommendations of the World Association for Photobiomodulation Therapy. These procedures may be used by doctors to treat patients in other local markets.
